It seems like when we were kids we had the chance to participate in treasure hunts a lot; whether it be ones that our mothers or fathers prepared for us, at birthday parties, or connected to school activities. I recall when I was young, Santa Claus would often hide one of our presents and leave behind clues for us to find it. Geocaching is a popular way for you to treasure hunt. The way geocaching works is that people hide a cache or “treasure” and provide the geo coordinates where the cache can be found. Commonly the cache is a metal box of some kind with a log book and a pen or pencil to write with in addition to some fun odds and ends. When a cache is found, the treasure hunter signs the log book and can choose one of the “treasures” from the cache and is encouraged to leave something else in its place. Although that's a description of a traditional cache, caches may differ in their size and purpose. Some caches are quite small like a film or match container. These usually only contain a log in them and tend to be for the pleasure of the hunt. Quite often caches may be stashed at locations where there's something appealing to see or a great view. Geocaching is certainly a great way to get your treasure hunting fix.

Metal detecting is yet another modern day form of treasure hunting. Employing a metal detector, you can go out and discover all sorts of old buttons, pins, coins, and jewelry. It is super thrilling hearing the tone tell you that you will find something underneath you and then digging for your treasure. There are lots of places to go metal detecting, but one that may turn up some precious treasure is around old homesteads. In the past a lot of people did not put their money in banking institutions, they would bury it. Usually they would bury it nearby their dwelling, and frequently where they would be able to see it from the house such as in sight from the kitchen window. Other popular locations were dog houses or chicken coups where there would be a “built in alarm.” Metal detecting can be another great way to do some present day treasure hunting to find real treasure.

Lastly, another way you're able to do some modern day treasure hunting is to find groups that put on treasure hunts. You can still find individuals that really enjoy treasure hunting and will create treasure hunts for others to take part in. Some even offer quite a bit of cash for solving the clues and finding the treasure. A few of these will charge for the clues and some of them are free. There aren't a lot of these groups out there, but there are a few and they can be super fun!
